Background of the study
Viral memes have emerged as a powerful cultural force in the digital age, influencing not only social behavior but also linguistic practices. In Nigeria, Instagram and TikTok are key platforms where memes serve as vehicles for creative expression and linguistic innovation. Memes on these platforms often involve playful manipulation of language, leading to morphological changes such as new word formations, blended terms, and innovative affixation patterns (Okoro, 2023). The rapid circulation and iterative modification of memes contribute to the evolution of morphological patterns, reflecting both global digital trends and local cultural nuances. This study investigates how viral memes on Instagram and TikTok affect morphological patterns in Nigerian digital communication. It examines the processes by which memes create, disseminate, and normalize new linguistic forms. Statement of the problem
Despite the popularity of memes as a form of digital expression, their impact on morphological patterns in Nigerian language has not been thoroughly examined. Existing research often focuses on content analysis without addressing the underlying morphological innovations that memes provoke (Chukwu, 2023). This gap leaves a limited understanding of how digital culture influences the formation and evolution of new word forms. Additionally, the comparative dynamics between Instagram and TikTok—two platforms with distinct content styles—remain underexplored, thereby obscuring the broader implications for language change in Nigeria (Ibrahim, 2024).
